What did johnny mean when he told ponyboy to stay gold?

With reference to the poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost, Johnny wants to say that nothing lasts forever especially not to waste time to fulfill his plans of using his potential and leave the life he has lived by being a convict; instead he should be wise enough and live fruitfully.
