The gosmastha we're Indian agents of the British East India Company, who signed bonds with local weavers and artisans to deliver goods to the company. They also fixed the prices of the goods.

The word Gomastha means agent in persian, they were paid servants who were appointed by the East India Company to supervise weavers, collect supplies, and examine quality of clothes.
