How can DNA be used in convictions when the population shares so much similar DNA?

Although DNA is very similar between different persons, there's a little percentage of this molecule that only belongs to us, and can be used to differentiate one person from another. Considering that percentage we share and we do not share with others, we can say that almost 99.99 % make us similar to others, while that 0.01 % make us different.
