Why did Japan want to seize the pacific islands

Japan knew that those islands had natural resources, but also that they were good places to build military forts. That would be helpful in a war because they could easily attack the enemy from small islands. That’s why after the attack at the U.S Pearl Harbor, the Japanese seized all the pacific islands.
